Can I use my UK phone in Montenegro? Roaming, the euro myth and the eSIM option
In short
Yes, your UK phone works in Montenegro, but only Sky charges it the same as Spain on every plan, at £2 a day. Montenegro uses the euro without being in the EU, so EE bills it as Rest of World Zone 1: £26.50 for a 7-day pass (checked on 24 October 2026, EE price guide, 31 March 2026). The best eSIM for Montenegro is a data-only plan sized to your days: ours is £2.99 for 1 GB over 7 days.

This site is not affiliated with any of the networks mentioned here; we sell eSIMs. How we compare
You have four ways to stay connected: your UK network, a travel eSIM, a local SIM card or a pocket Wi-Fi. On Sky you may not need an eSIM: £2 a day keeps calls and texts on your UK number (checked on 24 October 2026). Elsewhere the euro is the trap. It looks like EU roaming, and the bill says otherwise.
Is Montenegro in EU roaming for UK networks?
No. Montenegro is not in EU roaming: it sits in no UK network’s Europe zone, and Sky is the one network that charges it like Spain on every plan, £2 a day (checked on 24 October 2026). O2’s list of 48 Europe Zone destinations leaves Montenegro out (O2 EU roaming).
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roaming on your UK network | £2.00 to £84.00 a day or pass from about £1.50 per GB | Data roaming on; on some networks a pass bought before you fly | Paid passes cost more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your UK SIM |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from £2.99 by card; from £0.70 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or texts on your UK number |
Roaming prices as published by the 15 UK networks, checked on 24 October 2026; price per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in pounds at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount. This site is not affiliated with these networks; we sell eSIMs.
O2 Ultimate and Three Complete plans include it anyway. Other plans use a non-Europe zone: EE’s Rest of World Zone 1, shared with the USA and Turkey, O2’s Zone 2 or Tesco’s Region 4. A “Europe” pass does not cover it, and Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia share the gap (roaming in Europe).

What do UK networks charge in Montenegro?
Roaming in Montenegro on UK networks costs £26.50 for 7 days on EE, £8 a day on Vodafone and Three, £7 per 24 hours of use on O2 and £2 a day on Sky (checked on 24 October 2026). Four networks charge by the MB instead, from 10p to £5.
Those five run your UK allowance on your own number. The rest sell a set amount of data or bill each MB.

| giffgaff | 20p/MB, or a travel add-on | Zone A; add-on prices are in the app only, not checked by us (giffgaff roaming) |
| Tesco Mobile | £5 a MB | Region 4, pay monthly and pay as you go (Tesco Mobile roaming) |
| Asda Mobile | £1/MB | World Group 1 (Asda Mobile roaming) |
BT puts Montenegro in Roaming Zone 6; we hold no current BT figure, so check BT’s page before you fly.
A week of daily use, our arithmetic: Sky £14; EE £26.50 on the 7-day pass (seven 24-hour passes: £38.50); Three £42 on its pass, £56 by the day; O2 Travel £49; Vodafone £56. Each keeps your UK number; our data-only plan is a different product.
Is a travel eSIM worth it for Montenegro?
For a week of maps and messages, yes: a Montenegro eSIM from the UK is £2.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only, against the week’s sums above. For two days in Kotor, two Sky days (£4, our sum) or one £5.50 EE pass is simpler. The best eSIM for Montenegro is the one sized to your trip.
Our GB and days plans run on the MTEL network, LTE only, with no ID check; none lists 5G, so expect 4G in Kotor and Budva. You need an unlocked eSIM-compatible phone. Install before you travel, over Wi-Fi (how to install an eSIM). The plan starts on first connection in Montenegro, so installing early costs no days.
| Plan | Data per day (our arithmetic, not a forecast) | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| £2.99, 1 GB, 7 days, data only | about 140MB a day | maps, messages, a few taxi bookings |
| £6.99, 5 GB, 30 days, data only | about 170MB a day | a longer stay, some video calls |
| £9.99, 10 GB, 30 days, data only | about 330MB a day | remote work, streaming |
Your phone’s data counter after an ordinary week at home beats these averages.
Three names cover the local networks: Crnogorski Telekom, One Montenegro and m:tel. We have not checked their prices, rules or coverage; take your passport, and expect prices to differ by shop.
Montenegro SIM card vs eSIM comes down to your UK number. A local SIM replaces your UK SIM in a single-SIM phone, so bank codes by text stop arriving. A travel eSIM sits beside it: calls and texts still reach your UK number (keeping your UK number), and WhatsApp runs on the travel data. Roaming or eSIM weighs the two.
Read the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Montenegro on GOV.UK before you book.
Montenegro, Albania and Croatia on one trip
Our Europe plan covers all three (checked on 24 October 2026); UK networks split them. Croatia costs the same as Spain on all 15 networks, Montenegro and Albania on Sky alone.
The rate changes at the border. On a day trip from Dubrovnik to Kotor your phone moves to a Montenegrin network, and on automatic selection it can switch before the checkpoint. Every UK network must send a free message when you connect abroad, with prices and the charging period, unless you opted out. That text names the rate that has just started.
For the next leg of a Balkans trip, Albania has its own network table. One eSIM for the Balkans is our Europe plan: one install, one data balance, data only. Switch data roaming off on the UK line first (data roaming settings).
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Montenegro?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. In the phone’s SIM settings, pick the travel line for mobile data; your UK line stays on for calls and texts, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Montenegro as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch aeroplane mode on and off, and let it find MTEL; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimworld.co.uk with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, £2.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, £6.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, £14.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If your UK plan already includes Montenegro and its fair use limit is enough for you, roaming costs you nothing extra and keeps your number (compare the networks). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Is Montenegro in EU roaming?
No. Montenegro uses the euro but is not in the EU or in any UK network’s Europe zone. Sky charges it like Spain, £2 a day, and O2 Ultimate and Three Complete include it; other plans bill it as outside Europe.
Can I use EE in Montenegro?
Yes, with a pass. EE lists Montenegro in Rest of World Zone 1: £5.50 for 24 hours or £26.50 for 7 days. Without a pass you get no mobile data.
What is the best eSIM for Montenegro?
A data-only eSIM installed before you travel suits a week or more; for two or three days, a pass from your own network is simpler. Our Montenegro plan runs on the MTEL network, LTE, and starts on first connection.
Can I use my UK phone in Montenegro?
Yes, at a charge. Your UK network bills its non-Europe rate there, except Sky at £2 a day. Buy a pass first, or switch data roaming off and use a travel eSIM for data.
