giffgaff roaming: the EU data limit, travel add-ons and eSIM on giffgaff

In short

giffgaff includes up to 5GB of data per plan in its 37 EU Zone destinations, then charges 10p per MB (checked on 24 October 2026, giffgaff EU roaming help). giffgaff’s own wording: “that’s a maximum of 5GB per plan, not per month or per visit”. Outside the zone, USA and Turkey data costs 20p per MB unless you buy a travel add-on in the app.

Information verified on 24 October 2026 at the official sources listed below. This is not financial advice; check card settings, fees and limits with your bank before you pay. How we check information.

Compare with a travel eSIM for Europe — from £1.99

This site is not affiliated with giffgaff; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

You may not need an eSIM. For a week or two in Spain, France, Italy or Ireland on a giffgaff plan with 5GB or more of data, your giffgaff SIM already works. An eSIM helps only above the limit, outside the zone, or on a long trip.

Does giffgaff work in Europe, and what is the limit?

Yes: giffgaff data works across its EU zone, up to 5GB per plan (checked on 24 October 2026, giffgaff roaming). If your plan has less than 5GB of UK data, that smaller amount is your limit. Past it, data costs 10p per MB.

The word that catches people is “plan”. giffgaff counts the 5GB against the plan, “not per month or per visit”. Our reading: two trips inside one plan share the same 5GB, and a new 5GB comes with your next plan. giffgaff lets you start the next plan early once less than 500MB is left.

Here is what the per-MB rates mean in money. These are our sums from giffgaff’s own rates:

Data usedEU zone, over the 5GB (10p per MB)Zone A or Zone B (20p per MB)
10MB£1£2
100MB£10£20
500MB£50£100

Our arithmetic from giffgaff’s rates, checked on 24 October 2026.

A week of maps, photos and video calls in Spain can pass 5GB, particularly if the same plan already carries your data at home. Check what your phone shows under data usage before you go.

There is a second limit, on time. giffgaff gives EU roaming for up to 63 days to members who used giffgaff in the UK in the 63 days before arriving. Stay longer and giffgaff texts you that roaming will be switched off; after that you pay from your credit.

Set giffgaff’s credit spend cap before you go. It is a cap you switch on yourself; giffgaff does not set one for you.

One charge people only find on the bill: giffgaff says UK freephone 080 numbers “are chargeable while overseas”. Most companies also give a +44 number, which your plan covers.

Ireland is part of the zone. All 15 networks we compare include the Republic of Ireland; on giffgaff it sits inside the same 5GB per plan as Spain. For the same countries on every network, see roaming in Europe.

Which countries are in the giffgaff EU zone, Zone A and Zone B?

giffgaff roaming countries fall into five groups. The EU zone has 37 destinations; elsewhere you pay per MB abroad: 20p in Zone A and Zone B, 2p in Zone C and £5 in the rest of the world (checked on 24 October 2026, giffgaff roaming).

giffgaff lists the zones as pay as you go roaming, charged from credit:

Four places surprise people. Switzerland is in Zone B, not the EU zone, so it is 20p per MB from the first megabyte. Gibraltar goes the other way: it is in the EU zone.

Monaco is in Zone A at 20p per MB, though it sits on the French coast. Andorra is in the rest of the world at £5 per MB, so 100MB on a ski week there is £500 (our arithmetic). Switch data roaming off on the giffgaff line before you cross into Andorra.

Near a border your phone can also pick a network outside the zone. giffgaff’s own example is Cyprus, where a phone can connect to a Turkish network. giffgaff suggests choosing the network by hand in your phone’s settings; see data roaming settings.

giffgaff travel data add-ons: what they cover

giffgaff sells travel data add-ons of 1GB, 5GB or 10GB, each lasting 30 days, “From £4” (checked on 24 October 2026, giffgaff travel add-ons). You buy them in the giffgaff app by Visa, Mastercard or American Express; PayPal is not accepted.

“From £4” is a starting price, not what every add-on costs. giffgaff publishes per-country prices in the app only, so we did not check them and we state none here. Look at the price for your destination in the app before you rely on it.

How the add-on works:

  • One add-on covers the whole EU zone.
  • Outside the EU zone, an add-on works only in the country you bought it for.
  • The 30 days run from the date of purchase, and an add-on “cannot be activated at a later date”.
  • An add-on lifts the 63-day limit on EU roaming while it is valid.

The timing rule matters most. Buy the add-on when you land, not the week before; on a multi-country trip, giffgaff’s advice is to buy each one on arrival in that country. You do not need a plan to buy one, but calls and texts then come from credit.

giffgaff’s roaming page lists add-ons for “24 selected destinations outside the EU zone”. Its two pages disagree on Egypt: it is in the add-on list on the roaming page and missing from the help article’s list. We follow neither and make no claim about an Egypt add-on, so check the app.

An add-on is data on your own giffgaff line, so your number stays live. Our plans are data only, on a second line, and most start on first connection abroad (the activation rule is shown on each plan). For how to run both on one phone, see keeping your UK number.

giffgaff add-on or a travel eSIM for the USA or Turkey?

In the USA and Turkey, giffgaff charges 20p per MB without an add-on, and a travel add-on is listed for both (checked on 24 October 2026, giffgaff roaming). Our 1 GB plans for 7 days are on the pages below.

The comparison for one week, with both sides in full:

Destinationgiffgaff (checked on 24 October 2026)Our plan, 1 GB for 7 days, data only
SpainEU zone: included up to 5GB per plan, then 10p per MB£2.99
USAZone A: 20p per MB; travel add-on from £4, price by country in the app£2.99
TurkeyZone A: 20p per MB; travel add-on from £4, price by country in the app£2.99
EgyptZone A: 20p per MB; add-on not confirmed£3.99

The products differ. giffgaff’s add-on gives you 1GB, 5GB or 10GB for 30 days from purchase, on your own number. Our plan is data only, with validity starting when it first connects abroad. Spain is the line where giffgaff may cost you nothing extra.

Without an add-on, 100MB in the USA is £20 and 500MB is £100 at 20p per MB (our arithmetic). A few MB of messages stays small; maps and video do not. Roaming or eSIM walks through the same choice for any network.

Turkey: buy and install your eSIM before you travel. eSIM shops, including ours, may not open on Turkish networks.

Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man on giffgaff

giffgaff’s Jersey and Guernsey charges are Zone B rates, the same as the Isle of Man: data 20p per MB, texts 30p, and calls and voicemail 15p a minute (checked on 24 October 2026, giffgaff roaming). Gibraltar is in the EU zone. Switzerland is in Zone B too.

Jersey and Guernsey feel like home, but for roaming they are not the UK, and your giffgaff plan’s inclusions do not follow you there. Our Europe plan does not cover Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man either; Gibraltar is in it. The Crown Dependencies guide compares every network.

On a ship, ferry or plane, giffgaff data costs £5 per MB, calls £1 a minute and texts 30p. At that rate 10MB is £50 (our arithmetic). A ferry to Jersey can connect to a maritime network without you noticing, so switch data roaming off at sea and use the ship’s Wi-Fi. Our eSIMs use land networks, so they work in port, not at sea; see the cruise page.

eSIM on giffgaff: activation and transfer

To get a giffgaff eSIM, download the giffgaff app, create a new account and activate the eSIM in the app; an order on the website also finishes in the app (checked on 24 October 2026, switching to an eSIM with giffgaff).

If you already have giffgaff and want to move to an eSIM, giffgaff gives the app path: Account > SIM > Replace my SIM > Switch to a new eSIM. You need Wi-Fi or data, and you must activate on the device that will hold the eSIM.

Do the giffgaff eSIM swap at home, days before you fly. giffgaff switches eSIMs from 4:30am to 9:30pm; for members it “usually takes less than an hour” but can take up to 24 hours at busy times. Once the eSIM is active, your physical SIM stops working.

Menus on the phone itself differ by make and model; how to transfer an eSIM has the paths for iPhone, Samsung and Pixel.

Your giffgaff eSIM is your giffgaff line, with your number. A travel eSIM from us is a second, data-only line next to it. A dual SIM phone holds both: giffgaff for calls and texts, the travel line for data, with data roaming off on the giffgaff line (data roaming settings).

Frequently asked questions

Does giffgaff have free roaming?

Partly. giffgaff includes up to 5GB of data per plan in its 37 EU Zone destinations (checked on 24 October 2026). Beyond 5GB it charges 10p per MB. Outside the EU zone you pay per MB or buy a travel data add-on.

Is EU roaming free with giffgaff?

Up to the limit, yes. giffgaff says the maximum of 5GB is “per plan, not per month or per visit” (checked on 24 October 2026). After that data costs 10p per MB, unless you buy a travel data add-on in the app.

Do I need to tell giffgaff I am going abroad?

No. Neither giffgaff’s roaming page nor its EU roaming help asks you to say where you are going. The exception is a new member with no UK usage before the trip: roaming may be off, and giffgaff asks you to chat to an agent with proof of UK residence. giffgaff must text you free when your phone connects abroad, unless you turned roaming notifications off (Ofcom General Condition C3.15).

Who still provides free EU roaming?

Ten of the 15 UK networks we compare include Europe, with different limits: O2, iD Mobile, Lebara, Lyca, Tesco, BT, giffgaff, Talkmobile, Asda and SMARTY, plus Vodafone on Euro Roam plans and Three on Value and Complete. EE, Sky and VOXI charge, and Three charges on Lite plans.

Does giffgaff work in Jersey and Guernsey?

Yes, but it is charged. giffgaff puts Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Switzerland in Zone B: data 20p per MB, texts 30p, calls 15p a minute. Gibraltar is in the EU zone.
