Morocco SIM card, roaming or eSIM: what a UK phone costs in Marrakech

In short

You have four ways to stay connected in Morocco: your UK network, a travel eSIM, a local Moroccan SIM card or a pocket Wi-Fi. EE charges £39.50 for a 7-day pass there (checked on 24 October 2026, EE price guide, 31 March 2026). Our Morocco eSIM is £3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only.

Information verified on 24 October 2026 at the official sources listed below. This is not immigration or legal advice; check GOV.UK and the official website of your destination before you travel. How we check information.

This site is not affiliated with any of the networks mentioned here; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

Morocco is outside every UK Europe zone, so no Europe pass or “included in Europe” rule reaches it. You may not need an eSIM for a short trip: Sky charges £2 a day there (checked on 24 October 2026), and a pass keeps calls and texts on your UK number. The costly part is the default. A phone left on its normal settings in Marrakech bills by the day, the minute or the MB.

What do UK networks charge in Morocco?

Roaming in Morocco on UK networks costs £8 for 24 hours or £39.50 for 7 days on EE, £8 a day on Vodafone and Three, and £2 a day on Sky (checked on 24 October 2026). Every UK network puts Morocco in a zone outside Europe, and four of them charge it per MB.

Roaming prices as published by the 15 UK networks, checked on 24 October 2026; price per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in pounds at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount. This site is not affiliated with these networks; we sell eSIMs.

Each row is that network’s own figure and the plan it applies to. EE, Vodafone and Three unlock your UK allowance on your UK number; the add-ons and Bolt Ons give a fixed amount of data. Our plans are data only.

Our arithmetic for seven days of use, phone used on every day: EE comes to £39.50 with the 7-day pass, or £56 as seven 24-hour passes. Vodafone comes to £56 at £8 a day. Three comes to £56 paid day by day, or £42 with its 7-day pass. Sky comes to £14. These run on your UK number; our plan is data only, so they are different products.

How a roaming bill builds up in Marrakech

A bill builds up from the lines you did not know were charged: received calls, texts and background data. One person posted this on the EE Community forum on 10 June 2025:

“They charge me £324.70 for receiving calls whilst on holidays in Marakkesh.”

That is one person’s account of their own bill, not a price list. The network figures are the ones in the table.

Without a pass, EE charges £2.46 a minute for calls and 98p a text in every Rest of World zone (checked on 24 October 2026). Our arithmetic: ten minutes of calls at that rate is £24.60. On O2, a call in Zone 3 costs £3 a minute whether you make it or receive it (checked on 24 October 2026).

An EE pass runs for 24 hours from the moment you buy it, not for a calendar day. One bought at 4pm on arrival ends at 4pm the next day.

Three habits cut the risk:

  1. Buy a pass or plan before you land, not after the text arrives.
  2. Turn off data roaming on the UK line, and use the travel eSIM for data.
  3. Ask people to message you on WhatsApp rather than call your UK number.

Switching data roaming off does not stop a charge for a call or a text. Data roaming settings has the menu paths.

A week in Morocco: your UK network vs eSIM

A roaming pass is cheaper

5.6GB for 7 days (0.8GB a day, social media and photos): what it costs on the four big UK networks. We compare each network’s public roaming passes and daily rates. Some plans have roaming built in (for example Vodafone Global Roam, O2 Ultimate, Three Complete and Sky Diamond VIP), so check your own plan.

EEyour UK data · 7 days · pay monthly only £39.50
Vodafone3 × 2GB · 8 days · Pay As You Go only £41.04
O26 × 1GB · 30 days · pay monthly only £390.00
Threeyour UK data (up to 12GB a month) · 7 days · pay monthly only £42.00
eSIM in Morocco6 × 1 GB · 7 days £23.94

On roaming your UK number also takes calls and texts; the eSIM is data only. Network prices as published, checked on 24 October 2026; the eSIM at its price in pounds on 1 Nov, charged in pounds by card. This site is not affiliated with these networks; we sell eSIMs. Work out your own trip.

Local Moroccan SIM card or travel eSIM?

Local networks: Maroc Telecom, Morocco and inwi are the three names you will hear for a Morocco SIM card. We have not checked their prices, registration rules or coverage, so we quote none. Bring your passport, and expect prices to vary by shop.

The Morocco SIM card vs eSIM choice comes down to your UK number. A local SIM replaces your UK SIM in a single-SIM phone, so bank passcodes sent to your UK number do not arrive. A travel eSIM leaves your UK SIM in place.

Our Morocco plan runs on the Orange network in Morocco, LTE only, data only, with no ID check. On 4G/5G coverage, that means 4G: the plan lists no 5G. You need an eSIM-compatible phone that is unlocked.

Buy your Morocco eSIM from the UK and install before you travel, over Wi-Fi. The plan starts on first connection in Morocco, so installing early uses up none of its days.

Read the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Morocco on GOV.UK before you book (checked on 24 October 2026).

How much data for a week in Morocco?

A riad stay runs on Wi-Fi at the riad, and mobile data goes on maps in the medina, ride apps and WhatsApp. We have no measured Moroccan figure, so the per-day numbers below are our arithmetic on the plan sizes, not a usage forecast.

PlanData per day (our arithmetic)Fits
£3.99, 1 GB, 7 days, data onlyabout 140MB a day over 7 daysmaps, messages and a few ride-app bookings
£15.99, 5 GB, 30 days, data onlyabout 170MB a day over 30 days, or about 700MB a day if you use it all in one weeklonger stays and video calls

Between the two sit £7.99 for 2 GB over 15 days and £11.99 for 3 GB over 30 days, both data only.

Check your phone’s mobile data counter for a week at home first: that number beats any estimate. Download offline maps over riad Wi-Fi before you walk into the medina. A city break of three to seven days with Wi-Fi where you stay fits the 1 GB plan. Agadir beach days, desert tours or remote work point to 5 GB. How much data do I need? works it out by app.

Keep your UK number and WhatsApp

A travel eSIM is a separate, data-only line: it carries no calls or texts. Calls and texts to your UK number still go to your UK SIM, so leave it in the phone for bank texts (keeping your UK number). WhatsApp runs on data and works over the travel line.

How to transfer or install an eSIM has the menu paths for iPhone, Samsung and Pixel. Choose the travel line for mobile data and leave the UK line on for calls and texts. That UK line is still charged at its Morocco rates, as in the table above. Roaming or eSIM walks through the same choice for any network.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Morocco?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. In the phone’s SIM settings, pick the travel line for mobile data; your UK line stays on for calls and texts, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Morocco as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add globaldata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch aeroplane mode on and off, and let it find Orange; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimworld.co.uk with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, £3.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, £15.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, £35.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If your UK plan already includes Morocco and its fair use limit is enough for you, roaming costs you nothing extra and keeps your number (compare the networks). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Which SIM card is best for tourists in Morocco?

For a week or more of data, a data-only eSIM or a local Moroccan SIM card; for a short trip on your UK number, your own network’s Morocco charge. Compare the figures in the table first, and keep your UK SIM in the phone for bank texts.

Will an eSIM work in Morocco?

Yes, if your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked. Dial *#06#: an EID on screen means it takes an eSIM. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you travel. Our Morocco plan runs on the network, LTE, and starts on first connection in Morocco.

Is it better to buy a SIM card at the airport?

Not if you need your UK number. A Morocco SIM card needs your passport and replaces your UK SIM in a single-SIM phone, so bank texts stop arriving. A travel eSIM installed at home keeps your UK SIM in place.
