Will my UK phone work in Albania? Roaming outside the EU zone, and the eSIM option

In short

Albania is not in EU roaming, and only Sky charges it like Spain: £2 a day (checked on 24 October 2026, Sky tariff guide). The other 14 UK networks charge extra there. Our Albania eSIM is £3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only.

Information verified on 26 October 2026 at the official sources listed below. This is not immigration or legal advice; check GOV.UK and the official website of your destination before you travel. How we check information.

This site is not affiliated with any of the networks mentioned here; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

You have four ways to stay connected: your UK network, a travel eSIM, a local Albanian SIM or a pocket Wi-Fi. On Sky, or on a Three Complete, Vodafone Global Roam or O2 Ultimate plan, you may not need an eSIM at all. On other plans the default is the trap: a phone left on normal settings in Sarandë bills by the day, the pass or the MB.

Is Albania included in EU roaming on UK networks?

No. Albania is not in the EU, and none of the 15 UK networks puts it in its Europe zone (checked on 24 October 2026). Sky still charges £2 a day there, as it does in Spain.

OptionPriceWhat you needWeak point
Roaming on your UK network £2.00 to £84.00 a day or pass
from about £1.25 per GB
Data roaming on; on some networks a pass bought before you fly Paid passes cost more per GB than the eSIM
Pocket Wi-Fi router Not verified Collect it, keep it charged and return it One connection for the group, only while you stay together
Local SIM bought on arrival Not verified A free SIM slot and a shop after landing On a one-slot phone it replaces your UK SIM
Travel eSIM from this site from £3.99 by card; from £1.10 per GB An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator Data only: no calls or texts on your UK number

Roaming prices as published by the 15 UK networks, checked on 24 October 2026; price per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are in pounds at the day’s rate: your card is charged exactly that amount. This site is not affiliated with these networks; we sell eSIMs.

O2’s list of 48 Europe destinations leaves Albania out, and O2 puts it in Zone 2 (O2 EU roaming, checked on 24 October 2026). The others put it in a rest-of-world zone; our Europe zone comparison shows the edge cases.

Some plans include Albania anyway. Three Complete covers every Three band, Vodafone Global Roam covers Zone C and O2 Ultimate covers Zone 2. Read your own plan first.

What do UK networks charge in Albania?

Roaming in Albania on UK networks costs £5.50 for 24 hours or £26.50 for 7 days on EE, £8 a day on Vodafone and Three, £7 per 24 hours on O2 and £2 a day on Sky (checked on 24 October 2026). Four networks charge by the MB instead.

BT lists Albania in its Roaming Zone 4, but we hold no current Albania figure for BT. Check BT’s own roaming page before you fly.

Lyca also lists Albania country passes, but their validity text disagrees with their names. We follow the EU Roaming Pass, as on our Lyca page.

Seven days of use, our arithmetic: £14 on Sky, £26.50 on EE with the 7-day pass, £49 on O2 Travel and £56 on Vodafone. Three comes to £56 day by day, £42 with its pass or £26 with the Data Travel Pass. EE, Vodafone, Three, O2 and Sky use your UK allowance on your own number. Our plans are data only.

Is a travel eSIM worth it? The best eSIM for Albania from the UK

For a week of data, a data-only eSIM is the lower-risk route unless your plan already covers Albania. Our Albania plan runs on the One Albania network, data only, with no ID check. On 4G/5G coverage, the plan lists 4G only. It starts on first connection (our plan data, checked 24 October 2026).

The best eSIM for Albania from the UK depends on whether you need your UK number. A travel eSIM is a separate data line, so calls and texts still reach your UK SIM. Keep that SIM in the phone for bank texts: see keeping your UK number.

Buy your Albania eSIM from the UK and install before you travel, over Wi-Fi; installing early costs no days. You need an unlocked eSIM-compatible phone. How to install an eSIM has the steps.

In the Albania SIM card vs eSIM choice, a local SIM is bought on arrival with your passport. In a single-SIM phone it replaces your UK SIM. We have not checked local prices or registration rules, so we quote none. SIM cards abroad compares the routes.

How much data do you need for a week in Albania?

About 140MB a day fits in £3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only: maps, messages, a few bookings. For video calls or remote work, £15.99 buys 10 GB over 30 days, data only, about 330MB a day. Both are our arithmetic on these GB and days plans; we hold no measured Albanian usage figure.

Your phone’s data counter for a week at home beats any estimate. Check your plan’s hotspot and tethering terms before you share a connection. Roaming or eSIM walks through the choice for any network.

What happens on Corfu?

Ofcom warns that a phone near a border can join a foreign network by accident, and names Northern Ireland and Ireland, and Turkey and Greece (Ofcom: using your mobile abroad, checked on 24 October 2026).

Our reasoning, not an Ofcom finding: Corfu faces the Albanian coast, so a phone there can join an Albanian network. That network is outside the Europe zone of 14 UK networks, so a plan that covers Greece may not cover it. Near the coast, choose your network by hand. Our Greece guide covers the islands.

Albania and Montenegro on one trip

Our Europe plan covers Albania and Montenegro (checked 24 October 2026), so one plan fits a Balkans trip from the Albanian Riviera to Kotor. On UK networks, only Sky charges Montenegro like Spain too.

Our Albania plan covers Albania only. See Montenegro and the Europe eSIM.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Albania?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. In the phone’s SIM settings, pick the travel line for mobile data; your UK line stays on for calls and texts, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Albania as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch aeroplane mode on and off, and let it find One Albania; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimworld.co.uk with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, £3.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, £9.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, £25.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If your UK plan already includes Albania and its fair use limit is enough for you, roaming costs you nothing extra and keeps your number (compare the networks). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Will my UK SIM work in Albania?

Yes, as a roaming SIM, but not on Europe terms. Albania is outside the Europe zone of every UK network, so you pay a daily charge, a pass or a rate per MB. Sky charges £2 a day; Tesco charges £5 a MB.

Is Albania included in EU roaming?

No. Albania is not in the EU and sits in no UK network’s Europe zone. O2 leaves it off its 48 Europe destinations, and Sky is the only network that charges it like Spain, at £2 a day.

Which SIM is best for tourists in Albania?

For a week of data, a data-only eSIM, or Sky’s £2 a day on your own number. A local Albanian SIM replaces your UK SIM in a single-SIM phone, so bank texts stop arriving.
