O2 roaming: the Europe Zone, the Travel Inclusive Zone and O2 Travel, and when you need an eSIM

In short

O2 includes 48 Europe destinations in your Pay Monthly plan at no daily charge, up to 25GB a month (checked on 24 October 2026, O2 EU roaming). If your UK allowance is smaller than 25GB, you use all of it abroad. Outside those 48 places O2 stops your data unless you add an international bolt-on: O2 Travel or a Data Roaming Bolt On.

Information verified on 24 October 2026 at the official sources listed below. This is not financial advice; check card settings, fees and limits with your bank before you pay. How we check information.

This site is not affiliated with O2; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

You probably do not need an eSIM in Spain, France or Italy. A travel eSIM helps in three cases: past 25GB, outside the Europe Zone, or on a stay long enough for O2’s fair-use rule. Turkey, Albania and Montenegro are outside it.

Is Europe included on O2, and what is the limit?

O2 includes EU roaming up to 25GB on Pay Monthly, pay as you go Big Bundles and Rolling plans (checked on 24 October 2026, O2 roaming help). The 25GB limit applies when your UK allowance is bigger. Under 25GB, you get your whole UK allowance.

O2 puts it this way: “If you reach 25GB or if you use all your UK data allowance when roaming, you’ll need to buy a data Bolt On if you want to keep using data.” It texts you when you get close and again when you reach the limit.

Three conditions matter:

  • Plan type. Classic pay as you go is charged in the Europe Zone as at home. Pay as you go Big Bundles and Rolling plans get the 25GB rule.
  • Device. Phone SIMs only. A tablet Pay Monthly SIM works in the UK only.
  • Fair use. O2 counts days, not gigabytes, as the next paragraph shows.

O2’s fair-use terms say that more than 63 days abroad in 4 months is charged at £3.50 a GB, 3.3p a minute and 1p per text (O2 roaming fair use). A student on a four-month placement in Lisbon passes 63 days after nine weeks. A long stay is the third reason a second line can make sense.

Ireland is included like home on all 15 UK networks, O2 among them. For Ireland you need no travel eSIM.

For a week in Spain within 25GB, O2 charges nothing beyond your plan (checked on 24 October 2026). Our Europe plan is £2.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only (the Europe eSIM). They are different products. O2 uses your UK allowance, minutes and texts on your own number. Ours is worth it only past 25GB or on a long stay.

Which countries are in the O2 Europe Zone?

The O2 Europe Zone has 48 destinations, and it includes Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man (checked on 24 October 2026, O2 EU roaming). It does not include Turkey, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Serbia or Greenland.

Those seven are the trap. Albania and Montenegro sit in O2 Zone 2, Turkey too, and Greenland in Zone 1. Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia (listed by O2 as Macedonia) and Serbia sit in Zone 3, the zone with the highest prices.

Our Europe plan covers Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia, as well as Turkey (see Albania, Montenegro and Turkey). For every network on the same list, see roaming in Europe. The Crown Dependencies need their own page: Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar. Our Europe plan does not cover Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

What is the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone, and which plans have it?

The O2 Travel Inclusive Zone covers 27 destinations outside Europe, including the USA, on Volt and selected Plus plans (checked on 24 October 2026, O2 Travel Inclusive Zone). Ultimate plans cover Zones 1 and 2, 75 destinations in all. Pay as you go plans are not eligible.

O2 also lists some SIM Only plans, such as a 12-month plan of 100GB and up bought from 3 September 2020. 30-day SIM only plans are not eligible. Check your own plan in My O2 or on O2’s Travel Inclusive Zone page before you rely on it.

Ask which plan you hold before booking anything. A Volt customer going to Japan gets no inclusive cover, because Japan is Zone 2 and only Ultimate reaches it.

What does O2 charge outside Europe: O2 Travel and bolt-ons?

Outside the Europe Zone, O2 Travel costs £7 per 24 hours, only on days you use the phone (checked on 24 October 2026, O2 Travel). A Data Roaming Bolt On costs £6 to £65. Without either, O2 says “we’ll stop your data abroad” (O2 data roaming Bolt Ons).

The O2 Travel bolt-on has four rules that decide the bill:

  • £7 per 24 hours, charged only on days of use. The 24 hours start with your first call, text or data use; receiving calls or texts does not start them.
  • Speed. Data runs up to 2Mbps, which O2 calls “fast enough to watch standard definition Netflix on your mobile”.
  • Destinations. 75, which is Zones 1 and 2. Zone 3 is not covered.
  • Plans. Pay Monthly only. Switch on by texting TRAVEL to 23336 or in My O2.

O2 says “the price of the O2 Travel Bolt On won’t be included in your Spend Cap”. With a Spend Cap you set yourself, you can still run up £7 a day on top of it. The cap is the customer’s to set, and since the statutory £45 limit ended, any cap is a choice, not a law (Ofcom roaming protections).

Bolt Ons cover data only: calls outside Europe cost £3 a minute, made or received, and a text costs £1. For pay as you go outside Europe O2 says “standard roaming rates”; we hold no figures for them.

O2 Travel or a travel eSIM for Turkey, the USA or Albania?

For 7 days of use, O2 Travel adds up to £49 (our arithmetic: 7 × £7; checked on 24 October 2026). A 1GB Data Roaming Bolt On costs £6 to £9. Our plans are data only, 1 GB over 7 days.

Sources: O2 figures from O2 Travel and O2 data roaming Bolt Ons, checked on 24 October 2026; our plans are data only and most start on first connection abroad (check the activation rule shown on your plan).

The products differ. Both O2 routes keep your own number. O2 Travel includes minutes, texts and data at up to 2Mbps. The 1GB Bolt On is data only: calls cost £3 a minute, and the data stops at 1GB unless you buy more. Ours is a separate line with 1 GB of data, no calls.

Two cases settle it. Short trips on Volt, Plus and Ultimate plans, with your destination in the inclusive zone: stay on O2. Check first that your Plus plan is on O2’s list. A week in Turkey, in O2’s Travel Zone 2, without Ultimate: O2 Travel at £49 or a 1GB Bolt On at £9. 1GB goes fast if you stream.

Turkey: buy and install your eSIM before you travel. eSIM shops, including ours, may not open on Turkish networks.

Roaming or eSIM walks through the same decision for any network.

eSIM on O2: activation and transfer

On O2 you choose eSIM when you order; SIM Only customers find their O2 eSIM QR code in My O2 under “Install a SIM” (checked on 24 October 2026, O2 eSIM help). A pay as you go eSIM comes from an O2 store. O2 says an eSIM “costs the same as a plastic SIM”.

To move from a plastic SIM to an eSIM, O2 gives two routes. Some phones show a “Convert to eSIM” option for the O2 SIM, which converts it on the same phone. Otherwise O2 support or a store swaps it and issues a new QR code. O2 says never to share that QR code with anyone. O2’s page says a dual SIM phone needs steady Wi-Fi while you set up.

We found no activation time on O2’s page, so we give none. The phone makers’ own steps for adding or moving an eSIM are in how to transfer an eSIM.

Your O2 eSIM is your O2 line and your number. A travel eSIM from us is a second, data-only line beside it. A dual SIM phone holds both: O2 for calls and texts, the travel line for data, with data roaming off on the O2 line (data roaming settings). To keep your UK number reachable, read keeping your UK number.

On a ship or ferry your phone may join a maritime network at prices far above normal roaming. We did not check O2’s rates for this. Use the ship’s Wi-Fi. Our eSIMs work on land networks only; see the cruise page.

Do I need to tell O2 I’m going abroad?

In the Europe Zone you buy nothing and O2 asks for nothing (checked on 24 October 2026, O2 roaming help). Outside it you must switch on O2 Travel or a Data Roaming Bolt On yourself, or O2 will stop your data.

Three steps cover what matters before you leave:

  1. Check your destination against the 48-destination Europe Zone, then against Zones 1 and 2 if it is outside.
  2. Outside Europe, text TRAVEL to 23336 or add a bolt-on in My O2, before you land. Check your plan for the Travel Inclusive Zone first.
  3. Read the free text O2 sends when you connect abroad. Ofcom’s General Condition C3.15 requires it to say whether the destination is in your plan, the prices, any fair-use limit and what happens beyond it (Ofcom: using your mobile abroad).

Frequently asked questions

Is EU roaming free on O2?

Yes, in the 48-destination Europe Zone, up to 25GB a month, or your whole UK allowance if that is smaller (checked on 24 October 2026). Past 25GB you need a data Bolt On. O2 also has a fair-use rule: more than 63 days in 4 months is charged at £3.50 a GB. The name is O2, with the letter O; people also type it 02.

Do I need to tell O2 if I am going abroad?

Not for the Europe Zone, where you buy nothing. Outside it, O2 stops your data abroad unless you add O2 Travel (text TRAVEL to 23336 or use My O2) or a Data Roaming Bolt On. O2 also sends a free text when you connect abroad, which Ofcom requires.

Is Turkey in the O2 Europe Zone?

No. O2 lists Turkey outside the Europe Zone, in its Zone 2, where O2 Travel costs £7 per 24 hours of use (checked on 24 October 2026). Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia are outside it too.

How much does an O2 eSIM cost?

Nothing extra. O2 says “Using an eSIM costs the same as a plastic SIM” (checked on 24 October 2026). You choose eSIM when you order a plan, so the plan price applies. A travel eSIM from us is a second, data-only line, priced on the page of each country.

Can I convert my SIM to an eSIM on my own?

Often, yes. O2 says some phones show a “Convert to eSIM” option for your O2 SIM, which turns it into an eSIM on the same phone. Otherwise O2 support or a store swaps it and issues a new QR code. A SIM Only customer finds the code in My O2 under “Install a SIM”.
