Best eSIM for Egypt from the UK: Red Sea resorts, Cairo and what roaming costs

In short

No UK network puts Egypt in its Europe zone, so the best eSIM for Egypt is one that costs less than your network’s charge there. EE charges £39.50 for a 7-day pass, Vodafone £8 a day and Sky £2 a day (checked on 24 October 2026, EE price guide). Our Egypt eSIM from the UK is £3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only. You have four ways to get online: your UK network, a travel eSIM, a local SIM or pocket Wi-Fi.

Information verified on 24 October 2026 at the official sources listed below. This is not immigration or legal advice; check GOV.UK and the official website of your destination before you travel. How we check information.

You may not need an eSIM. O2 Ultimate and Three Complete plans include Egypt, and Sky VIP Diamond customers roam there free (checked on 24 October 2026). For a few days, Sky’s £2 a day or Lyca’s 1GB pass at £10 for 7 days can be enough. Find your network’s row below first.

What do UK networks charge in Egypt?

Roaming in Egypt on UK networks costs from £2 a day on Sky Mobile to £5 per MB on Tesco Mobile (all rows checked on 24 October 2026). The zone your network puts Egypt in sets the price, and several give no data at all without a pass.

A per-MB rate runs up fast: 100MB at Tesco’s £5 a MB is £500 (our arithmetic). On iD, the default £45 limit stops data after 30MB at £1.50 a MB.

Vodafone, Three and Sky charge per day of use, not per day abroad. Data roaming off does not stop it on Sky or Vodafone: a call made or a text sent on your UK line still starts the day. Full rules for each network are on our EE, O2, Vodafone and Lebara pages.

Is a travel eSIM worth it for a Red Sea week?

A travel eSIM is worth it when your network charges by the day. A week of use in Sharm el-Sheikh or Hurghada comes to £56 on Vodafone and £49 on O2 Travel (our arithmetic, checked on 24 October 2026). Our 1 GB plan covers 7 days for £3.99, data only.

These are different products. The network passes use your UK allowance and keep your number for calls; the Lyca and Lebara rows carry only the GB shown. Our plans are data only, on a second line. Calls stay on your UK SIM; keep your UK number covers the set-up, and roaming or eSIM walks through the same choice for any country.

How we compared eSIMs for Egypt

For 1 GB over 7 days, four sellers charged between £4.49 and £6.99 on 24 October 2026, against £3.99 for our plan. We left out promotions and prices shown in US dollars to a UK visitor, and we name no seller.

PlanSellers’ range, 24 October 2026Sellers in rangeOur plan, data only
1 GB, 7 days£4.49 to £6.994£3.99
5 GB, 30 days£13.46 to £16.004£14.99
10 GB, 30 days£20.94 to £26.004£23.99

Price alone does not pick the best eSIM for Egypt: plans differ in speed limits and in hotspot and tethering rules.

Our Egypt plans are GB and days plans from 1 GB over 7 days to 20 GB over 30 days. There are also 3-, 5- and 10-day plans with 3 GB a day at high speed, then 1 Mbps.

Local networks: Vodafone Egypt, the Egyptian network rather than Vodafone UK, marked 4G; the plan lists no other, so not Egypt, Etisalat by e& or WE. If Vodafone Egypt has no signal where you stay, there is no second network to fall back on.

We give no map or speeds for 4G/5G coverage in a given resort. Our plan listing states no hotspot rule, so check the plan page before you share data with a laptop. The plan starts on first connection to a network in Egypt, not when you buy it.

Pick the data size by what your phone used in a week at home, and the days by how long you will use it.

Egyptian SIM card at the airport or eSIM?

An eSIM installed at home needs no queue at arrivals. Ours can be installed up to 365 days after you buy it, and it starts on first connection in Egypt. We haven’t checked Egyptian SIM prices, so we give none.

Egypt SIM card vs eSIM comes down to time and a number. A local SIM is sold at airports and in town; take your passport, and expect prices and rules to vary by shop. It gives you an Egyptian number but costs time after landing. Pocket Wi-Fi shares one connection with a group, but it is one more device to charge and return.

A common worry is an eSIM that fails to start at Sharm airport. Install before you travel, at home on Wi-Fi, and check the new line shows on the phone before you leave. If it shows no signal after landing, eSIM no signal lists what to try.

An eSIM needs an eSIM-compatible phone that is not locked to one network. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, the phone takes an eSIM. Our how to install an eSIM guide has the steps.

What does the FCDO say about Egypt?

The Egypt page of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) lists areas it advises against all travel to and areas it advises against all but essential travel to. The page was updated on 4 August 2026 and was still current when we checked it on 25 October 2026. We quote it and add no advice of our own.

“FCDO advises against all travel to within 20km of the Egypt-Libya border, except for the town of El Salloum, where we advise against all but essential travel.”

“FCDO advises against all travel to the North Sinai Governorate.”

“FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the northern part of the South Sinai Governorate, beyond the St Catherine-Nuweibaa road, except for the coastal areas along the west and east of the peninsula.”

“FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Ismailiyah Governorate east of the Suez Canal.”

“FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions, except for: Luxor, Qina, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings”

“FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Hala’ib Triangle and the Bir Tawil Trapezoid.”

The Western Desert line goes on to list more exceptions, among them the Faiyum Governorate and the oasis town of Siwa. The same page carries a “Regional tensions” block. Three of its sentences read:

“The US and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 17 June in relation to the conflict in the Middle East, however the situation in the region remains unpredictable.”

“There is a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation in the region.”

“On 29 July, an apparent drone strike and fire caused damage to two ships moored off Damietta, in northern Egypt.”

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Egypt?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. In the phone’s SIM settings, pick the travel line for mobile data; your UK line stays on for calls and texts, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Egypt as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch aeroplane mode on and off, and let it find Vodafone; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimworld.co.uk with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, £3.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, £14.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 10 days, £25.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If your UK plan already includes Egypt and its fair use limit is enough for you, roaming costs you nothing extra and keeps your number (compare the networks). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Which eSIM works in Egypt?

Any data-only eSIM for Egypt works on an eSIM-compatible phone that is not locked to one network. Ours runs on Vodafone Egypt and starts on first connection there, not when you buy it. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, the phone takes an eSIM.

How much does a SIM card cost in Egypt?

We haven’t checked Egyptian SIM prices, so we give none. Shops set their own prices and rules. Take your passport, and compare the offer with the eSIM plans on this page before you pay.

What is the best internet in Egypt?

No network wins on our evidence: we have not tested Egyptian networks, so we rank none. Our plan uses Vodafone Egypt, marked 4G in the plan listing. For a resort week, install before you fly and check the signal on your first evening.
