Best eSIM for Japan from the UK: eSIM, pocket Wi-Fi or a tourist SIM, compared

In short

The best eSIM for Japan depends on what your UK network charges there. Sky leaves Japan out of its £2 Roaming Passport Plus and charges £2.16 a MB; EE puts it in Rest of World Zone 3, at £8 for 24 hours with 500MB (checked on 24 October 2026, Sky tariff guide). Our Japan eSIM from the UK is £2.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only. You have four ways to stay connected: your UK network, a travel eSIM, a local SIM or pocket Wi-Fi.

Information verified on 24 October 2026 at the official sources listed below. This is not immigration or legal advice; check GOV.UK and the official website of your destination before you travel. How we check information.

What do UK networks charge in Japan?

Roaming in Japan on UK networks costs £8 a day on EE, Vodafone and Three, and £1 to £5 a MB on Asda, SMARTY, Sky and Tesco (all rows checked on 24 October 2026). Sky, EE, Lebara and SMARTY put Japan in a different zone from the USA and Thailand, so a bundle that covers those may not cover Japan.

EE’s pass works out at £16 a GB, because £8 buys 500MB. Vodafone charges only for days you use the phone; an EE pass runs 24 hours from purchase.

Is a travel eSIM worth it for Japan?

A travel eSIM is worth it when your network charges by the day or the MB: 14 days of use in Japan come to £112 on EE and Vodafone, £84 on Three and £25 on Lebara (our arithmetic, checked on 24 October 2026). Our 5 GB plan covers 30 days for £7.99, data only.

Trips to Japan are long: visits by residents of Great Britain averaged 22.8 nights in 2025, and 39.4% of them fell in April to June (ONS Travel trends 2025).

Prices: each network’s own page, checked on 24 October 2026; the totals are our arithmetic.

These are different products. Every network row keeps your number; Vodafone and Three use your UK allowance, while EE, Lebara and Lyca give the data shown. Our plan is a data-only eSIM on a second line, so calls stay on your UK SIM; keeping your UK number covers the set-up.

Roaming or eSIM walks through the same decision for any country.

How we compared eSIMs for Japan

For 1 GB over 7 days, four sellers charged between £2.99 and £3.99 on 24 October 2026, against £2.99 for our plan. We left out promotions and US-dollar prices, and name no seller.

PlanSellers’ range, 24 October 2026Sellers in rangeOur plan, data only
1 GB, 7 days£2.99 to £3.994£2.99
5 GB, 30 days£7.48 to £12.994£7.99
10 GB, 30 days£12.50 to £21.994£11.99

Price alone does not pick the best eSIM for Japan: speed limits differ, so compare the plan card.

Our Japan plans are GB and days plans. Each starts on first connection to a network in Japan, not when you buy it, and can be installed up to 365 days after purchase. The Japan listing names and and marks both 5G. We give no 4G/5G coverage map and no speeds for Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or smaller towns; check the network’s own map.

Install before you travel, at home on Wi-Fi, and switch the eSIM line on for mobile data when you land. Keep data roaming off on your UK line; on Sky, a call or a text in Japan still costs money.

An eSIM needs an eSIM-compatible phone: dial *#06#, and if an EID shows, the phone takes one. Our how to install an eSIM and transfer an eSIM guides have the menu paths.

Pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM for Japan?

Pocket Wi-Fi is a rented router that shares one connection; an eSIM puts data on the phone itself. We have checked no rental prices, so we give none. Pocket Wi-Fi vs eSIM comes down to how many people share, and whether they stay together.

Pocket Wi-Fi suits a group wanting one device for several phones and a laptop, but it is one more thing to collect, charge and return. An eSIM suits travellers who split up for the day: each phone has its own data.

Sharing one eSIM as a hotspot? Our plan pages state no hotspot rule, so message us on WhatsApp before you rely on it. Our hotspot guide covers the phone side.

Tourist SIM card in Japan: what to expect

We haven’t checked local SIM prices, so we give none. A tourist SIM in Japan is bought in person or ordered ahead: take your passport, and expect prices and rules to vary by seller.

Japan SIM card vs eSIM comes down to practicalities. A local SIM gives you a Japanese number, but it takes your UK SIM’s slot or a second line. An eSIM is installed at home and needs no shop.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Japan?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. In the phone’s SIM settings, pick the travel line for mobile data; your UK line stays on for calls and texts, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Japan as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add wbdata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch aeroplane mode on and off, and let it find SoftBank and KDDI; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimworld.co.uk with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, £2.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, £7.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, £18.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If your UK plan already includes Japan and its fair use limit is enough for you, roaming costs you nothing extra and keeps your number (compare the networks). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best SIM card in Japan?

It depends on the use. For data only, a travel eSIM installed at home. For calls on your own number, your UK network plus a pass. For a Japanese number, a local SIM; we have not checked local SIM prices.

What SIM can I use in Japan?

Your UK SIM if your network roams there, a travel eSIM in an eSIM-compatible phone, or a local SIM bought in Japan. Sky, Tesco, Asda and SMARTY charge Japan data per MB, as does giffgaff without its add-on (checked on 24 October 2026).

Is pocket Wi-Fi better than an eSIM?

Pocket Wi-Fi suits a group sharing one device; an eSIM suits one traveller who wants data on the phone with no device to charge. Our plan pages state no hotspot rule, so ask us before sharing one eSIM with a group.
