Can I share data from a travel eSIM as a hotspot?

In short

Whether an eSIM hotspot works depends on the plan, and our plan pages state no hotspot rule. They show the data and the days, not a yes or no on sharing. If you need to share, ask us on WhatsApp before you buy. The phone side is simple: iPhone, Samsung and Pixel each have a hotspot switch that shares the line carrying your mobile data.

Does my travel eSIM plan allow a hotspot?

We do not publish a hotspot rule for our plans. So we cannot say yes or no for a given plan, and we make no promise either way. Message us on WhatsApp with the destination and plan size. Plans with a daily limit are covered under daily high-speed limits.

Apple describes the same dependency: “Personal Hotspot requires a wireless network provider that supports Personal Hotspot”. It adds: “The number of devices that can join your Personal Hotspot at one time depends on your network provider and iPhone model” (Apple, checked on 26 October 2026).

How do I turn on an eSIM hotspot?

Your phone shares one mobile data line at a time. Apple says: “Your iPhone can use one mobile data network at a time” (Apple). So choose the travel eSIM as the data line first, as in the data roaming settings, then switch the hotspot on.

iPhone. Apple’s path is Settings → Personal Hotspot (or Settings → Mobile, then Personal Hotspot). Turn on Allow Others to Join (Apple).

Samsung Galaxy. Samsung UK’s path is Settings → Connections → Mobile Hotspot and Tethering → Mobile Hotspot. Tap the switch to turn it on (Samsung UK).

Google Pixel. Google’s path is Settings → Network and Internet → Hotspot and tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot. Turn on Wi-Fi hotspot. Google says you can share with up to 10 other devices (Google).

Menus can differ by model and software version. Google notes that some of its steps “only work on Android 14 and up”. Then join from the other device with the name and password the phone shows.

How much data does sharing use?

A laptop on your hotspot spends data from the same eSIM plan as your phone, so its use comes off your balance. Vodafone UK’s data calculator quotes Netflix: HD video uses 3GB an hour and standard definition 0.7GB an hour (Vodafone UK, checked on 26 October 2026).

Our arithmetic from those two figures, for a laptop that only streams video:

Plan sizeHD video (3GB an hour)SD video (0.7GB an hour)
1 GBAbout 20 minutesAbout 1 hour 25 minutes
3 GBAbout 1 hourAbout 4 hours 15 minutes
5 GBAbout 1 hour 40 minutesAbout 7 hours

That is our sum, not a measurement of any plan. Vodafone calls its calculator “an estimate” and says “It is not a recommendation”. Music is lighter: Vodafone puts Spotify or TIDAL “High Quality” at “just over 115MB per hour”. We have no figure for anything else a laptop downloads while connected, so we give none.

Two people sharing one plan share one balance. Size a family trip with our data calculator, or buy a plan for someone else so each phone has its own.

How do I check what the eSIM hotspot has used?

The Balance card on your order page shows the data left on the plan, including what connected devices used. Phone counters are estimates; the steps for each phone are in how to check eSIM data usage. If the balance falls faster than expected, switch the hotspot off and compare.

What if the hotspot does not work?

  1. Check the data line. The travel eSIM must be selected for mobile data. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data, then pick the line (Apple).
  2. Check mobile data is on. Apple says if the hotspot switch is dimmed, “open Settings, tap Mobile and make sure that Mobile Data is turned on”. On Samsung it is Settings → Connections → Data usage → Mobile data (Samsung UK). On a Pixel, Google says: “If you’ve turned on Data Saver, turn it off to tether by Wi-Fi.”
  3. Check data roaming and signal. See data roaming settings and no signal with an eSIM.
  4. Check your balance. If the plan says “Data used up” or “Expired”, the hotspot stops too.

All four look right and sharing still fails? The plan may not allow it. Message us on WhatsApp with your order number and the device you are connecting.

Turkey: buy and install your eSIM before you travel. eSIM shops, including ours, may not open on Turkish networks. See our Turkey guide.
