Bali SIM card or eSIM from the UK: roaming costs and the Denpasar airport question

In short

The best eSIM for Bali depends on what your UK network charges in Indonesia. EE charges £26.50 for a 7-day pass in ROW Zone 1, Sky £2 a day and Vodafone £8 a day (checked on 24 October 2026, EE price guide). Our Bali (Indonesia) eSIM from the UK is £2.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only. You have four ways to stay connected: your UK network, a travel eSIM, a local SIM or pocket Wi-Fi.

Information verified on 24 October 2026 at the official sources listed below. This is not immigration or legal advice; check GOV.UK and the official website of your destination before you travel. How we check information.

You may not need us. O2 Ultimate plans and Three Complete include Indonesia, and Sky VIP Diamond customers roam free (checked on 24 October 2026). For a short trip, Sky’s £2 a day or Lyca’s £5 pass (1GB, 7 days) can be enough.

Bali SIM at Denpasar airport or eSIM?

A SIM from a Denpasar airport shop is bought after you land and gives you an Indonesian number; we have not checked its price. An eSIM installs at home: ours is £7.99 for 5 GB over 30 days, data only. Two weeks on your UK network cost £28 on Sky and £112 on Vodafone (our arithmetic).

These are different products. Network passes use your UK allowance and number. Our plan is a data-only eSIM on a second line, and calls stay on your UK SIM (keeping your UK number). Roaming or eSIM covers the choice for any country.

The Bali (Indonesia) SIM card vs eSIM choice comes down to where you buy it. A local SIM is sold in person, so bring your passport. We have not checked airport stock, prices or the Indonesian IMEI registration question. Pocket Wi-Fi is one more device to carry and charge.

Our plan needs no ID check, only an eSIM-compatible phone. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it takes one. How to install an eSIM has the steps.

Bali and Lombok on one plan

Our Indonesia eSIM lists Bali, Java, Lombok and the Gili Islands, so a trip from Ubud to Lombok needs one Bali eSIM, not two (plan listing, checked 24 October 2026). The listing says cover is not limited to those four but names no others, so on Nusa Penida or Flores keep Wi-Fi as a backup.

Local networks: Telkomsel and , both marked 5G in the listing. We give no 4G/5G coverage map or speeds.

Our GB and days plans run from 1 GB over 7 days to 20 GB over 30 days. Each starts on first connection to a network in Indonesia, not at purchase, and you can install it up to 365 days after purchase. Install before you travel, on home Wi-Fi.

On landing, pick the travel line for mobile data and turn data roaming on for that line only. Keep it off on your UK line. That stops data charges, not every charge: on Sky, a call or text you make still starts the £2 day.

We state no hotspot rule for this plan, so check the plan card before you use hotspot and tethering.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) last updated its Indonesia advice on 18 September 2026 (checked 26 October 2026). It says: “Volcanic eruptions occur frequently across Indonesia.” Read the full FCDO travel advice for Indonesia before you book.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Indonesia?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. In the phone’s SIM settings, pick the travel line for mobile data; your UK line stays on for calls and texts, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Indonesia as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add globaldata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch aeroplane mode on and off, and let it find Telkomsel and Indosat Ooredoo; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimworld.co.uk with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, £2.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, £7.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, £19.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If your UK plan already includes Indonesia and its fair use limit is enough for you, roaming costs you nothing extra and keeps your number (compare the networks). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth getting an eSIM for Bali?

Yes, if your UK network charges by the day or the MB in Indonesia. Sky charges £2 a day, EE £26.50 for 7 days and Vodafone £8 a day (checked on 24 October 2026). A data-only eSIM covers a week or a month for one price. Keep your UK SIM for calls.

What is the best eSIM for Bali?

There is no best eSIM for Bali on price alone, and we rank no seller. For data, pick the GB and days you would use at home and install before you fly. For calls on your number, use your UK network’s pass. For an Indonesian number, buy a local SIM; we have not checked its price.

Do you need a SIM in Bali?

No, but without one you depend on Wi-Fi. Without a pass, EE, O2 and Talkmobile give no data in Indonesia; Vodafone, Three and Sky charge by the day; giffgaff, iD, Tesco, SMARTY and Asda charge per MB (checked on 24 October 2026).
