Using your phone on a cruise: maritime networks, port days and the eSIM option

In short

No travel eSIM works on a cruise ship’s own maritime network, and UK networks charge far above normal roaming for it. EE charges £16 per 10MB, giffgaff and SMARTY £5 a MB and iD Mobile £9.60 a MB (checked on 24 October 2026). A cruise eSIM is for port days only.

Information verified on 24 October 2026 at the official sources listed below. This is not financial advice; check card settings, fees and limits with your bank before you pay. How we check information.

This site is not affiliated with any of the networks mentioned here; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

You may not need an eSIM at all. On a Mediterranean cruise, 10 of the 15 UK networks we checked include Europe in your plan on land, up to a limit. An eSIM helps when your plan charges a daily rate in Europe, or when the ports sit outside your network’s Europe zone, as in the Caribbean.

Does an eSIM work on a cruise ship?

No, not at sea. A travel eSIM joins land networks, and on a ship your phone can only see the ship’s maritime network, which no travel eSIM covers. Ofcom warns about satellite networks on ferries and cruises in its advice (updated 6 July 2026, Ofcom: using your mobile abroad).

Your phone does not ask before it joins. With your UK line on, it can connect to the ship’s network without telling you, and the first sign can be the bill. You cannot see where the ship’s network starts, so treat the gangway as the switch.

Data roaming off is not enough on its own. It stops mobile data on your UK line, but calls and texts can still go over the ship’s network at maritime rates: £1 a minute on giffgaff, £2.50 on SMARTY and £6 on iD Mobile. Aeroplane mode stops all of it.

What UK networks charge on the ship’s network

Each network sets its own ship rate. EE sells 10MB for £16; giffgaff, SMARTY and Tesco Mobile charge £5 a MB, Three £6 and iD Mobile £9.60 (checked on 24 October 2026). Sky lists “Over the sea” as “No roaming”.

Maritime roaming is priced network by network. These are the maritime charges by UK network, each from the network’s own page; the 10MB column is our sum for one forgotten hour of background data.

A “no figure” row means we found no rate, not that the ship is free. Three also warns that from 15 December 2025 “some Maritime services may not be fully accessible”, and that locally provided Wi-Fi “may be an alternative option”. Ask your network before you sail.

A spend cap limits ship network charges; it does not prevent them. Sky, iD Mobile and SMARTY set a default data roaming cap of £45 a month. Three’s is £45 excluding VAT and BT’s £35; on the other networks you set your own.

At SMARTY’s £5 a MB, £45 is 9MB (our sum). For the settings, see how to switch data roaming off; Sky’s roaming page explains Sky’s cap in full.

Port days: when to switch data on

Switch your cruise eSIM on once you are ashore and off before you re-board. Aeroplane mode at sea keeps the phone off the ship’s network, where 10MB costs £50 on giffgaff or SMARTY (our sum from their £5 a MB).

Here is the order that works:

  1. At home, install the cruise eSIM on Wi-Fi and set it as your mobile data line. Menu paths for iPhone and Android are in our eSIM transfer guide.
  2. Switch data roaming off on your UK line. Set data roaming on the eSIM line as your order e-mail says.
  3. As you board, turn on aeroplane mode. Leave it on for every day at sea.
  4. For the ship’s Wi-Fi package, turn Wi-Fi back on with aeroplane mode still on.
  5. Ashore, turn aeroplane mode off. The eSIM joins a land network for your port-day data.
  6. On the gangway back, aeroplane mode goes on before you step aboard.

Which networks does the plan use in port? Each plan lists its own, per country. In our Europe plan, Spain uses Spain and Telefónica Móviles España, Italy uses ILIAD and WINDTRE, and Norway uses Telia (checked on 24 October 2026). The ship’s network is on none of these lists.

Ship Wi-Fi, port data or both?

Ship Wi-Fi covers the days at sea and a cruise eSIM covers the days ashore; neither covers the other. We did not check any cruise line’s prices, so we print none: read the ship Wi-Fi package terms on your booking before you sail.

Ask a few things of any package. Does it cover one device, or does a second phone need its own? Is it priced per day or per voyage?

Check two more points. Is there a data cap, and does the price change once you are on board? Does it allow calls, or only messaging apps such as WhatsApp?

At sea vs in port, the choice looks like this:

You wantUse
Messages and maps on shorean eSIM, in port only
WhatsApp messages at seaship Wi-Fi, with aeroplane mode on
To stay reachable on your UK number at seayour network’s maritime rate, or Wi-Fi calling if the package allows it
Nothing at seaaeroplane mode, no package

For a 7-night cruise with two or three port days, aeroplane mode at sea and an eSIM ashore keeps the sea days off your phone bill. Buy ship Wi-Fi only if you need to be online between ports.

Mediterranean and Norwegian fjord cruises

On a Mediterranean cruise your UK plan may already cover the ports: 10 of the 15 networks we checked include Europe on land, up to a limit (checked on 24 October 2026). Norway is in the Europe zone of most UK networks too, on land only.

That cover stops at the gangway. Europe roaming means land networks, so a Norwegian fjords cruise still needs aeroplane mode on the ship. Look up your own network on roaming in Europe before you buy anything.

Five networks charge for Europe on some or all plans: EE, Vodafone, Three, Sky and VOXI. Their daily charges, which let you use your UK allowance and number, are on that page.

Our Europe plan works as a cruise eSIM for European port days, data only. It covers Norway, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Portugal and 34 other countries, 41 in all. 1 GB over 7 days is £2.99, data only (checked on 24 October 2026, Europe eSIM page).

One gap matters on British Isles cruises: Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are not in our Europe plan. They are in our global plan, which covers 202 countries; 1 GB over 7 days is £5.99, data only.

If your cruise calls at a Turkish port: buy and install your eSIM before you travel — eSIM shops, including ours, may not open on Turkish networks.

Caribbean cruises

Our Caribbean plan covers 26 destinations for £5.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, data only (checked on 24 October 2026). It works on land networks on port days; on a Caribbean cruise the ship’s network stays off limits, so aeroplane mode at sea still applies.

It is not a “cruise eSIM” that works on board. You can buy it on the Caribbean eSIM page.

There is no single Caribbean eSIM for every cruise. The one that fits is the one whose list includes every port on your itinerary, so check it before you pay.

We checked port countries against our catalogue on 24 October 2026:

Port countryCaribbean planGlobal plan

If your itinerary mixes both groups, the global plan covers every row above except Puerto Rico and the last row. For the US Virgin Islands and Cuba we have no plan.

Also check your own network. It may sell a pass for the Caribbean that keeps your UK number and allowance. Our plans are data only, so compare the price, days and data on both sides before you buy. Our roaming or eSIM guide walks through that choice, and EE’s roaming page shows one network’s sums in full.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an eSIM on a Caribbean cruise?

Yes, in port, not at sea. A travel eSIM joins land networks, so it works on port days but not on the ship’s own maritime network. Keep the phone in aeroplane mode at sea and turn aeroplane mode off once you are ashore.

Is there a Caribbean eSIM card available?

Yes, as an eSIM rather than a plastic card. Our Caribbean plan covers 26 destinations and is data only (checked on 24 October 2026). Check that every port on your itinerary is on its list before you buy.

What SIM cards are available for cruise ships?

None that works on the ship’s network. A travel SIM or eSIM covers port days on land networks. At sea your choices are your own network’s maritime rate, which is high, or the ship’s Wi-Fi package.

What is a maritime eSIM?

A maritime eSIM would be a plan that works on ship networks at sea. We do not sell one: our plans use land networks, so they work in port, not on the ship’s network.
